Computer goes into "overdrive" when endnote and document with embedded references are open

Hello

I have noticed that when I have EndNote open and particularly when a Word document with embedded EndNote references is also open, the fan on my computer’s CPU starts whirring. The whirring stops shortly after I close both Word and EndNote. It’s not a problem really–just a bit annoying. I am curious to know what the CPU is doing when both applications are open–is it looking for possible citations? I would be interested to know If there are options in EndNote that I could turn off that would stop EN from doing whatever it is its doing while a Word document is open,.

Do you have “Instant Formatting”* turned on?   If so it usually conducts an automatic update of the reference list - the default setting is for 30 second.    You can either turn off Instant Formatting or change the scan time
