To fetch reference metadata, it seems EndNote X7.5 can currently only search by DOI on the CrossRef database. To save a few minutes of manually entering all the metadata, I often find myself searching on Google Scholar for the title of the article, discover the DOI on the journal’s website, copy that into EndNote and then request a reference update in EndNote, typically for a batch of references/PDFs.
There are two noteable things here:

At search.crossref.org you can search by DOI, title, author, year etc.

In EndNote, the CrossRef connection currently only accepts to search by DOI through OpenURL
The whole metadata extraction from PDF and query to CrossRef should be rewritten. CrossRef queries are capable of so much more than just DOI and maybe OpenURL is not the best way to do it.
