False alarm, I will leave this here as it may be useful for others.
I started seeing the same problem with MS Word… turns out Windows Defender has a setting that won’t allow applications to write to certain folders! Once I changed that setting (Virus & Threat Protection - Manage Settings - Manage Controlled folder access), the problem is solved.
