I’m on 10.13.6, and EndNote X8.2
What worked for me: change the layout to “bottom-PDF”. Click the button “open PDF”.
The layout appears to be important - showing the PDF on the right and opening it showed the bug. Also, double-clicking the reference shows the bug.
