Hello,
I recently purchased Endnote X8 have a new Dell XPS 15 laptop with Word 2016. Everytime I try to 'insert a citation' from Endnote (using the Microsfot interface), my Word document keeps crashing. I can click on the 'insert citation' tab and find the relevent reference, but as soon as I click 'insert' it crashes.
This is making Endnote obsolete at the moment and I need this rectified as I'm only year 1 of my PhD :-(!
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Matt

I would first determine if the issue is document specfic.
Open a new Word document and try inserting a citation.
If a new document does not crash then you will want to try the following steps on the document that does crash:
If the new document crashes as well then please try the following steps:
If that fails to resolve the issue please contact Technical Support

Hi,
I'm having the same issue.
I was able to open a new document and insert a reference successfully so I followed the first link as you recommended.
Unfortunately when I try to "format this cleaned up version of the document without running into problems" I very much run into problems as it just crashes windows again each time I click 'Update Citations and Bibliography'.
I had added references to the document many times without any issues, including several times only minutes before the issue occurred.
Any help would be very appreciated.

You mean you can't "convert" without it crashing? -- so you can't get to the select all and use the Word commands to remove all the field codes (on a copy!)?

I've had this problem for years, and I think I've finally fixed it.
It turns out I had a Styles folder in My Documents containing duplicates of every Style file in Program Files. I deleted all the duplicate Style files in the My Documents folder (thousands of them) and Endnote and Word now seem to be behaving.
I suggest looking for another Style folder on your system and making sure there are no duplicates. The same might go for Filters and Connections, although I didn't have any of those in My Documents.
This may not be the cause for everyone, but I hope it helps someone.

In general, I only keep about 200 output styles combined in the installation folder and the personal folder location (specified by the preferences). -- Certainly too many (output styles, connections, filters) causes performance issues with endnote. (and they should never be duplicates, or you won't know which one is being used by endnote, which usually defaults to the installation version, not the one you tweaked, so never name it the same thing)

Hi,
I am having the same issue with only a single document crashing when I try to insert a citations. It has only just started doing it. I have 51 citations. I tried to follow the above link but it does not work.
I tried to update citations and that also causes it to crash.
Im using endnote x7.8.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Heaps

Updated links to Tony's original reply:
Open a new Word document and try inserting a citation.
If a new document does not crash then you will want to try the following steps on the document that does crash:
you can also try this, but with complicated documents - this may mess up formating in general:
(I am not sure what the original KB article about what to do if happens to all new documents was).
