I have just tried to open an Endnote x7 file with Endnote x5 and it does not work. The file was originally created in x5 but in the meantime I have been using x7 on a PC. Today on my MacBook it wont’ open in x5.
Could someone just confirm that they are or are not compatible?

They are completely compatible; there is no difference at all between the file formats. However, it is very important that the library be moved correctly. If it is not, the issue you are reporting can occur.
