How to change the Reference Type in a series of selected References?

Hello Mary,

You can use Find and Replace function in EndNote to make this kind of change to a group of references:

You can use the Change Text / Find and Replace tool in EndNote to change any group of showing references.

As you are making a large change to your database, make sure to back up the library before continuing. To back up the library, please follow the steps outlined here:EndNote: Moving, backing up, or transferring libraries to another computer

With EndNote X1 and later, if you are trying to change all the references in your library, make sure you are on the All References group. Otherwise, make a group of the references you want to change and select that group so only the references you want to change are showing in the list.

Once you have All References or a group selected, please do the following:

  1. EndNote X1 to X4: In EndNote, go to Edit then Change Text.  X5 and later versions, In EndNote, go to Edit > Find and Replace…
  2. For the field labeled “In:”, choose Reference Type at the bottom of the drop down list.
  3. EndNote X1 to EndNote X4: In the “Search for” type the actual name of the reference type you want to change from. EndNote X5 and later: In the “Find” field type the actual name of the reference type you want to change from.
  4. Make sure “Match Words” is selected.
  5. EndNote X1 to EndNote X4: In the “Change the text to:” field type the actual name of the reference type you are trying to change. EndNote X5 and later: In the “Replace with:” field type the actual name of the reference type you are trying to change.
  6. Click Change.
