I know exactly what you mean. I am having the same issue. I have tried both “when selected” and “always” but there are some references that do not turn grey no matter which setting is selected. It’s very frustrating. It’s as if they dont have the field, however when i right click, one of the options is “update field” so they obviously are. Sorry I dont have a solution (I wish I did) but I guess the best way to tell if they are endnote or not is to right click.
