handling of same primary author et al, year, different year when the co authors are different in author, year citations

Basically citations (Smith et al, 1982; Smith et al, 1984) should be resolved to (Smith et al, 1982, 1984) regardless of who her co-authors are.  Currently it is only resolved to the shorter form, if the coauthors are all exactly the same and in the same order.
