Problem formatting Chicago 17th (in X9, PC version)

Please help! When I format, the bracketed numbers are not showing in the text nor in the refs. The only thing showing in the text is a space where the bracketed number should be, and the full bibliographic reference displays below, but without any numerical indication. I am a long time Endnote user and this really has me flummoxed. Appreciate any guidance!

EndNote X9 has two different Chicago 17th styles the first is Chicago 17th Author-Date which would produce in-text citations in the Author-Year format in the body of the document and the bibliography at the end. The other Chicago 17th Footnote does not product in-text citations and is meant for you to first create a footnote in the document using the Word feature under References to create the footnote section at the bottom of the page. When you insert into the footnote section then it will populate the footnote and create the bibliography at the end of the document.

If you use Chicago 17th Footnote and insert in the body of the document then you would see the behavior in your document.

You find some additional information about putting references into footnotes:

You can also change the output style in the document to a style like Numbered to get numbered citations and a bibliography.
