Problems downloading citations using Firefox Quantum and Endnote 8.2

As a long time user of Endnote, i regularly download citations from Web of Science of journal websites. I recently bought a new MacBook Pro and installed the latest version of firefox and upgraded to Endnote 8.2. But this combination no longer allows me to easily download citations. When i Export citations from Web of Science to Endnote desktop, it asks me to select the program. I specify Endnote 8 but then another window opens and there is no program file listed for Endnote 8 (unlike Endnote 7 which I previously used). Has anyone found a way to do this?

Please try these steps:

In order for Direct Export to work with Firefox on the Mac, you need to tell the browser how to handle the export file.
There are a variety of export formats (such as ENW, RIS and CGI files) used by the various online databases.

When you click on the export link, Firefox may prompt you with the message, “What should Firefox do with this file?”

Make sure “Open with” is selected and if a Choose button is present, click on it.

Browse to the Applications > EndNote folder and select the EndNote application file appropriate for your version of the software.

You can select the option “Do this automatically for files like this from now on” so Firefox does not prompt you the next time you export files of that type. If you do not get the Choose button but are seeing the drop-down menu, make sure your version of EndNote is listed.

If it is not listed, click on “Other” and browse to the Applications > EndNote folder and select the EndNote application file appropriate for your version of the software.

Click OK to start the export process.

If you are prompted to “Select a Reference library,” browse to the location of your library and click Open. Your library should open and the exported records should appear.

If you have upgraded your version of EndNote or the export is not working, you can troubleshoot the Firefox settings by going to the Firefox menu and selecting Preferences. Click on the Applications option and browse through the Content Type listings for the export associated with the online site. You can click on the Action option to the right of the Content Type to set Firefox to open the export file with the appropriate application. If your current version of EndNote is not present, you can click on “Use Other” and browse to the Applications > EndNote folder and select the EndNote application file appropriate for your version of the software. You should then be able to close and re-start Firefox to try the export again.

Note: If you minimize your library before you try to export from FireFox it will not get imported. You need to leave the library open and not minimized for it to directly import into the open library.
