The style that is in EndNote (including the one available for download) does not seem to match the style as described by the MHRA themselves:
Footnotes do not contain page ranges for journal articles;
Author names in the bibliography are the wrong way round - they should appear as Nockels, Keith, but appear instead as Keith Nockels. The bibliography is also numbered, but should be in author order. Deleting the bibliography and replacing it with one produced by “copy formatting” (to include things not cited, for example) still produces a list that is numbered.
I’m not too familiar with this style, being a science librarian, but I have checked my suspicions with my colleagues!
Does anyone have a version of the style that addresses these problems or have any thoughts?
I think that you can sort some of these problems by editing the style - I asked the same question of tech support and got the following answer. I’ve also asked them to update the style and get it right
To edit the style, open EndNote X6 and then click Edit > Output Style > Open Style Manager. Here locate the style and double click on it to open it.
To include page numbers in Footnotes
1.Click ‘Templates’ below ‘Footnotes’
2.Under ‘Journal Articles’, if you’d wish you could delete ‘Cited Pages’ and then click the ‘Insert Field’ to inculde ‘Pages’. Alternatively, you could also click Tools > Edit & Manage Citation(s) and then insert the page number in the suffix field
Modifying Author Names
Under ‘Citations’ click ‘Author Name’
On the right pane, you could change the ‘First Author’ to reflect ‘Smith, Jane’ and the other authors to reflect ‘Doe, John’. This would display the citations to appear as last name, first name
Sort order
By default the citations are sorted based on the Author and the Title. To change the sort order of the bibliography, click ‘Sort Order’ under ‘Bibliography’ and choose your requirement from the right pane.
After you’ve edited the style, click File > Save As to save a copy of your style. Once done, please be sure to choose the edited style in your document for the change to reflect.
You may also ask the Endnote people directly, to generate a new or updated style. (although I still can’t find this link on the www.endnote.com site itself).
I am new to Endnote and using MRHA. my problem is the citations in my document are not shown in the order in which they appear. what should be citation 1 as it appears in the first line of my doc, The Rule of St. Benedict actually appears as citation number 18, advice would be much appreciated, see below copy and paste from my document:
This paper argues the relevance of applying The Rule of St. Benedict (RSB),18 [Ma1] a 1500 year old monastic treatise to the accepted strategic business management system; the Balanced Scorecard (BSC).56
Are you supposed to be using the Footnote version? If so, you insert a footnote using the word processor tools, and then put your citation into the footnote. This would number them in order of usage. – Otherwise, you can edit the style
To edit the style, open EndNote X7 and then click Edit > Output Style > Open Style Manager. Here locate the style and double click on it to open it.

I’m a new EndNote user. MHRA Footnote style. I’m finding the ‘Footnotes Templates’ difficult. It would help me greatly if anyone knows of a users’ guide - a clear (and simple) list of the specialist characters and examples of when and how to use them. Eg. when editing the ‘Journal Article’ reference type in my Footnote Template, I’m not sure if a vertical stick/pipe is supposed to precede or follow the ‘Issue’ field, and also what the other different characters mean and their functions, like superscript o?
I have the document ‘Modifying Reference Types and Output Styles for Windows’, 23 December 2014 version, but although useful, it is not sufficiently specific.
