import - month missing in the date in DB

Hi,

I import my citations fromIEEE explore and www.engineeringvillage2.org, where the citations do have month set, but when I check in the DB, it’s missing.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

When you are downloading from Engineering Village, after selecting the option “RIS, EndNote, ProCite, ReferenceManager” and clicking on the “Download” button, you can choose to Save the file rather than opening it.

Now view this saved file in your word processor or other text editor. You will see that the database is not exporting the month, so EndNote is unable to import it. You could contact Engineering Village and ask them to include this information in the RIS download format.

The only other option that I can see is to save the records in the “Plain text format ASCII”, and then write a custom filter for this format.

thanks for the answer.

Indeed engineeringvillage2 do not export the month, but IEEE does, and it’s still missing in DB.

As I understood on each import there is a filter used. Could it be that the default filter in X2 is not picking up the date?

Thanks.

Hi Reg,

If you can send me the file you are trying to import, I will see if I can update the filter for you.

I tested a couple of journal articles in IEEE Xplore, and the download format does not include the date. For example:

TI  - Effect of graphitic carbon films on diamond nucleation by microwave‐plasma‐enhanced chemical‐vapor deposition
T2  - Journal of Applied Physics
IS  - 4
SN  - 0021-8979

So EndNote cannot import the date. Again, you have to contact IEEE to get them to include the Date in the EndNote download format.

Hi,

I’ve noticed now. It seems only the ASCII export is ok…

  1. Is there a way to import it directly from the ascii (open the ascii file with End Note and have it processed)? Do I need an import filter or anything?

  2. Do you know any other site that would have the same type of articles (besides IEEE and engineeringvillage2, as both seem to have the files incomplete…

Thanks a lot for the support!

The ASCII export from IEEE is not tagged, so it cannot be filtered into EndNote.

I don’t know about other databases that would be of use to you. Contact your library to see if they can suggest anything. Are you sure that you really need the month in your references? It isn’t normally required in referencing journal articles.

Yes, I need the month in my format… :frowning:

This is IEEE’s answer: “Thank you for contacting IEEE Xplore Support.
Please be advised this is an issue and this will be fixed sometime in the January 2010 IEEE Xplore update.”

Thanks for your support!
