Request for help

Hi there,

It sounds like you have two questions:

  1. If I understand your question correctly, you’ve imported PDFs into EndNote and have tried the Find Reference Updates feature but you still have empty records?

  2. And you are hoping for EndNote to import all the references in the bibliography of a paper?

Re: your first question, do make sure you enter something unique into the empty record (for exampe, the title of the paper, the DOI, the PMID, etc.), then save the record (important step), before trying the Find Reference Updates feature. This video goes over the process:

If EndNote is still not able to update the reference, then you will have to manually enter the reference.

Re: your second question, the only options I’m aware of are the following:

  1. If these are papers indexed in PubMed you can use the Hubmed Citation Finder. Here’s a description of this service:

  2. If you have access to the Web of Science (and the paper is indexed in Web of Science) you can export the paper’s cited references. This video goes over the process:
