RefMan Tab disappearing in WORD 2013

Hi,

I had EndNote (version 7) and RefMan (version 12) coexisting nicely on WORD 2013.

Problems:

  1. after a computer crash when WORD and RefMan were open, the RefMan tab in Word had disappeared.  I could get it back by going to Options > Add-Ins > Manage > COM Add-ins > Go and there rechecking “Reference Manager Cite While You Write” BUT only for this session of WORD (closing and reopening WORD made the RefMan Tab to disappear until redoing the same maneuver as above).

  2. I decided to reinstall RefMan 12 … (un-installling and re-installing it) and then… (i) the EndNote Tab had disappeared and I could not find it any more in the Options > Add-Inns > Manage …; (ii) this did not correct the problem with RefMan.

What should I do to (i) recover my EndNote Tab; (ii) correct the situation with RefMan ?

IMPORTANT: I have the SAME installation on several other compueters (running either WIN7 or Win10) that work perfectly well (thus WORD 2013 woth both EndNote and RefMan).  My problem is only for one computer (running Win7).

PS I put the same request on the Suport site for EndNote, but I post it here also because it pertains to RefMan whihc is no longer sofficialy supported.  I hope that other users of RefMan who have kept using it can help me.

Here are the steps given in the support case that was created:

The EndNote/Reference Manager tools might disappear everytime you restart Word if they were not added to Word with sufficient admin privileges. Please follow the below instructions to remove them and manually add it again with admin rights.

  1. Open Word as administrator (search for Word in Windows search menu, right-click and select "Run as administrator).

If you have trouble with running Word as Admin try:
Right click on it and open properties

  • go to “compatibility” tab and and select option “Run this program as an administrator”.
If the option is not enabled. Then click on button “Change settings for all users” (It might ask for admin authentication), and then option will be enabled.
  1. Click on the File ribbon and select “Options.”
  2. Click on “Add-ins.”
  3. Make sure the “Manage” options is “COM Add-ins” and click Go.
  4. Highlight Reference Manager Cite While You Write and click on Remove.
  5. Restart Word as administrator.
  6. Click on the File ribbon and select “Options.”
  7. Click on “Add-ins.”
  8. Make sure the “Manage” options is “COM Add-ins” and click Go.
  9. Select “Add” and browse to the following folder location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ResearchSoft\Cwyw\Reference Manager\12

If you do not have a “Program Files (x86)” folder, look in “Program Files” for the Common Files folder.

  1. Select “Reference Manager Cwyw.dll” and click OK.
  2. Make sure that the Reference Manager Cite While You Write option is checked and close the Window.
  3. Restart Word as a normal user and you should be able to use the Reference Manager tools.

Regarding the EndNote tools, check if the tools are disabled. If they are not disabled, follow the below instructions to manually add the EndNote tools in Word:

  1. Open Word as administrator.
  2. Click on the File ribbon and select “Options.”
  3. Click on “Add-ins.”
  4. Make sure the “Manage” options is “COM Add-ins” and click Go.
  5. Select “Add” and browse to the following folder location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ResearchSoft\Cwyw\EndNote\17

If you do not have a “Program Files (x86)” folder, look in “Program Files” for the Common Files folder.

  1. Select “EndNote Cwyw.dll” and click OK.
  2. Make sure that the EndNote Cite While You Write option is checked and close the Window.
  3. Restart Word as a normal user and you should be able to use the EndNote tools.
