I am also expericing this problem and have read the instructions on how to Delete the Word Data registry key, but am unable to complete them as I have a Mac (OSX 10.11.1). Can someone send along the instructions for Mac?
Also, it only happens with one particular document (my dissertation!) and if I open up a brand, new, blank document and try to insert a citation it works fine. Unfortunately, the problem persists when I copy and paste my entire dissertation into a new, blank document and then try to insert the citation. I’m trying to get my draft out to my committee tonight and I have already wasted 3 hours trying to figure this out. Any guidance is greatly appreciated!
