EndNote 8.1 seriously slow on MacOS 10.13

The spinning wheel opens up every time I open endnote.
I force-quit it every time and when it opens again, the spinning wheel comes on as soon as I try to load a new reference or delete an old one. Please help!

I did some testing also on EndNote Z9: no improvement. All versions since ENX7 are very slow on my mac.

Unfortunately, EndNote 9 is still a 32-bit application.

I am afraid EN is slow not because there are problems with external drives, attached PDFs etc. Users write here that EndNote works better when the library is not on a network drive or if attachments are removed from the library. This does help a little, but EN gets slower the longer it is used. It can be slowed down very fast just by downloading a large number of references from external databases.

I am afraid the problem is associated with memory management when executing complex tasks.

However, there is a truly magical trick: go back to a non-Retina screen.

One of my collaborators keeps EndNote 8 on an old non-retina Macbook Air. It works very fast, even with attachments and with libraries kept in Dropbox. Apparently, one of big EndNote problems is associated with memory management when indexing PDFs, generating previews (even when no PDF preview is turned in, apparently, a hidden preview is generated), etc. — when dealing just with more memory to assign. Hopefully, moving to 64-bit could resolve problems with managing screen and preview data.

Or better: switch to something that works. I found Bookends works incredibly well and is pretty inexpensive, but there are many other alternatives out there. And what, people should ditch their computers and switch to outdated, non-retina displays to possibly (and I stress, possibly) be able to run Endnote without as much of a slowdown?

Better to switch referencing software. I did it. I feel like an idiot for not having switched to Bookends sooner.

Recently, I was also having the same problem. I have 5000 plus references and more than half have pdf attached. I did not know what’s the reason, but I got clue after reading from the other users that google dirve backup a potential reason. I thought may be icloud also continueously checking and producing some notification due to my icloud folders are running over the limit. So, I just brrought my icloud folders below space limit and dang! Problem solved.

I thought may be sthis could help some one.

Thanks,

Reza

Much to my surprise after slogging through a bunch of publication updating in my copy of EndNote, my new MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) popped up with a box prompting me to update Java to Version 8 update 221.

Installed the update and suddenly my EndNote X8.2 is blazing fast again! No 20-second waits while dragging pubs into folders or saving updates.

SOLUTION TO SLOW SPEED.

JAVA!!

Update Java from Java.com ! WOW! FINALLY got something to work! FYI, Running OSX 10.14.16. Endnote 8.2. Now it is fast again! FYI IU shut down endnote while I installed Java to ensure some issue wouldn’t crop up. Then simply booted Endnote again without reboot of computer.

Boom! Thank you to ScrippsOcean. No thanks to EndNote for not helping other than simply having the forum (some help).

I would like to confirm that updating Java fixed the spinning wheel for me as well. Before I got a spinning wheel whenenver I was dragging a reference to another group, now I can drag multiple references and it’s as quick as I expect it to be.

Java 8 Update 231

Endnote X9.3.1

Mac OS 10.12.6

Macbook Air End 2010

Updating to the ‘latest’ java & disabling empty lines on display panel solved this issue for me on Mac OS Catalina 10.15.3 & Endnote 9. Windows natively allows automatic java updates hence those on windows are less likely to experience this.

I hope this helps someone.
