Recovering a corrupt library

I have EndNote X3. For whatever reason, it appears one of my libraries is corrupted. Since this is all material from archives, I’m willing to go to great lengths to try to recover it. Using the normal recovery function isn’t working. The main library file appears to have no content (it says it has 0k). BUT, the folder where all the data and attachments are stored appears to have a lot of files with content. I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to recover the citation data via these files, even if it means having to cut and paste it all. In other words, I don’t expect to be able to click a button and it be fixed, but instead have to wade through a bunch of random text in order to get the content of my library back. Has anyone else tried to do this? If so, how did you do it? I’m having trouble finding any files that give me any usable content from my library. Thanks

If the standard recovery method is not working for you, I would recommend sending the library to Technical support:

You should create a compressed copy of the library .enl file and the associated .Data folder. On a Windows operating system, select both items, right-click and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. On the Macintosh, select the two items, right-click (or Control-Click) and select Compress 2 items.

If the folder is there – try this.  Move any current corrupted library.enl file to a different location.  Also back up the whole of the DATA folder and contents to a new location. Now in the folder where your DATA folder is (not IN the DATA folder), using notepad or some other similar text only editor, create an empty file with the same library name as the DATA folder’s name.  Open it.  Have you recovered the library?

Sorry I lost it from “Also back up the whole of the DATA folder and contents to a new location. Now in the folder where your DATA folder is (not IN the DATA folder), using notepad or some other similar text only editor, create an empty file with the same library name as the DATA folder’s name”

Can you please explain in detail for me. I am a doctor (and sadly not a softwear engineer) so difficult to understand these commands.

Thank you so much.

"

Also back up the whole of the DATA folder and contents to a new location."  (this means make a copy of the endnote-library-name.DATA folder and subfolders to a new place, which is usually a right click drag and choose, “copy” not “move” action with the mouse on a PC).

“Now in the folder where your DATA folder is (not IN the DATA folder), using notepad or some other similar text only editor, create an empty file with the same library name as the DATA folder’s name”  (create a file with note pad.  name that file the “endnote-library-name” followed by .enl  you can’t use MSWord to do this, because MSWord has lots of hidden garbage in the file.  you have to use a simple text editor to create this empty file.  This filel should be in the same folder location as you copied the .DATA folder to)

So that folder will have these two contents

libraryname.enl (this is an empty text file)

libraryname.DATA (this is a folder with several subfolders)

Now click on the .enl file and it should open in Endnote using the information contained in the non-corrupted .DATA folder and subfolders.
