EndNote for MS Word: How to create blue and clickable in-text citations (including square brackets and numbers)

I am using EndNote V20 (in MS Word) to create a reference list for my manuscript. I wanted to make the in-text citations (including all square brackets and numbers) blue and clickable, like in the screenshot below.

At the moment, I can only make it done with the numbers. The brackets are still black and unclickable. I would like to ask if there is an effective way to fix it.

Thank you so much!

To make them “clickable” you could try the following: go in your Word document and choose the EndNote tab. In the tab you click on the little arrow in the right lower corner under “instant formatting”. A new window opens. In this window you tick the box for “Link in-text citations…”. If you click on a number now it should jump to the corresponding entry in the reference list. How to make them blue I have no idea. But I think that is more of a Word problem and not an EndNote topic.

Hi, then you click “Underline linked in-text citations,” and it will turn the numbers to blue (you can adjust the theme style to remove the line then). But the brackets cannot be turned to blue. This issue has been with me for a very long time, over years.

There might be a work around but you would have to format paint every reference to achieve the look in your picture. However the color does not change after clicking the reference as with the real hyperlinks.

  1. Open empty word document.
  2. insert two references separated by a paragraph
  3. make EndNote update so you have two separate active references
  4. mark the two references and chose the color you like
  5. Put your cursor in the first reference and make a right click and choose “edit field”
  6. Check the box for “preserve formatting during updates” and click “OK”
  7. the first reference is vanishes and is kind of “destroyed”
  8. use the brush to format paint each reference in your relevant document
I don’t know if there is a better solution for this but I could not find one. Maybe ask ChatGPT?
