can't add references to footnotes in X9

I haven’t used EndNote for a couple of months. When I try to add a reference to a footnote in MS Word, what I get is something that looks like an in-text citation in curly brackets, like: {Metzger, 1971 #288}.

The way I am trying to add the reference is the same as I did all throughout last year. Any thoghts on what might have changed?

The Instant Formatting feature is likely turned off in the document. Please see the following KB article on how to adjust the Instant Formatting setting in the document.
