Can import Word references into EndNote without risking duplication – assuming that the entries already in EN came from Word as well, so that the format should be the same?

I assume you are recovering them from a travelling library? No, you should import them into a new library and then import the second library into the first, with discard duplicates on.

“here” is where ever a computer is these days, but as I was away from the lab for almost 3 weeks, unfortunately “here” was in the lab!
