Endnote Toolbar greyed out when working on document out of Sharepoint

We are colloaborating on a document through sharepoint. The original document has citaitons and a bibliography built in endnote. 

When I open the file, my endnote toolbar is greyed out. I cannot update the bibliography.  

Does naybody else have this issue? What is the issue?  How can I get around it?

Note: this seems to be a mac specifc issue. I can update the citaiton on my Windoes machine.
