When importing PDFs into EndNote, the software currently does not reliably distinguish between standalone books and individual contributions within edited volumes. As a result, chapters and articles from collected volumes are frequently imported as generic references without the appropriate field structure for the “Book Section” reference type (i.e., separate fields for chapter author, chapter title, editor(s), book title, and page range).
Requested improvement: EndNote should better detect during PDF import whether a document is a book chapter or contribution within an edited volume, and automatically assign the “Book Section” reference type with pre-populated fields where metadata is available. Where automatic detection is not possible, users should be prompted to select the reference type before the import is finalized.
This would significantly reduce manual post-import correction, particularly for researchers in the humanities and social sciences who frequently cite individual contributions from edited volumes.
