Help!

Yesterday I started inserting the references in the text and saved the document. Today I opened it to go on inserting the references and when I inserted the first one it appeared with number 1 as it was the first of the text, not recognizing me the references I put before.

What can I do?

need more to go on.  What word processor, and version? What operating system?

What happens if you “convert to unformatted citations”  

Did anyone else “touch” the document (an advisor, a colleague) and is it truely not recognized or the wrong format?
