To my horror I opened Endnote today with an empty library and got this messege: C:/Documents and Settings/User/Desktop/C/Documents and setings/User/My Documents/My Endnote Library.enl was not found
Please advise as to how to recover library. My local Endnote dealer sais it might be a window problem and coudn’t come up with a solution.
I have a daily back up of Endnote Library.data folder but when I try to reload the library with it I doesn’t respond.
I have also tried the "recover library " function in the “Tools” menue and failed.
C:/Documents and Settings/User/Desktop/C/Documents and setings/User/My Documents/My Endnote Library.enl was not found
Could you provide more info?
Is this the correct path? it’s very odd as it points to documents and settings twice, while inbetween it heads to the desktop before the library.
Have you looked at the My Documents folder and confirmed that the EndNote file (My Endnote library.enl) is no longer present?
Have you checked the Recyle bin to confirm the Endnote file wasn’t mistakenly deleted and wound up in the bin? (If so, you can just restore the file).
What version of EndNote are you using (e.g., X3, X4, etc.), and is it the trial version or the “regular” version? And what is your computer’s operating system?
If you do have a backup of the My Endnote Library.DATA folder. Move the whole thing to a new place (not too deep in the directory structure. In particular I veer away from putting it in my documents, as that adds a whole nother long string of path to the name). As CrazyGecko mentions, the name as it stands is pretty unusual, and indicates some error that perhaps the whole of the documents & settings folder was copied to my documents at some point, becoming recursive).
But anyway. In the new .DATA folder location (NOT IN THE DATA FOLDER itself) create an empty text file with notepad with the name of the library (My Endnote Library.enl in your case, but I also recommend copying the library afterwards to a new unique name). Now try opening the newly created file and it should be recovered.
