PDF file cannot be opened

I’m running Endnote X7.5.3 on a mac running OSX 10.11.5.

I have my Endnote library set up to auto import any PDF going into a file on a network drive. Before I upgraded my mac this worked perfectly.

Now everytime I add a PDF to the folder, Endnote grabs it and stores it appropriately in the Imported folder BUT when I try and look at the PDF in the Endnote PDF viewer I get the following message:

The following file could not be opened. This may occur for a number of reasons including, but not limited to: the file is corrupt or the relative link was deleted. File blahblahblah.pdf

I can even attach the original pdf and visualize it just fine. This happens regardless of if the box under URLs & Links for creating a relative link is checked or not.

Same problem. Have you fine the solution ?

Same problem. Have you found a solution ?

I have the same problem and receive this error message when I want to open an attached PDF to a record:

“The following file could not be opened. This may occur for a number of reasons including, but not limited to: the file is corrupt or the relative link was deleted.”

I searched the net and I think I fond a root cause of this error message:

This error occurs when the PDF is corrupt. But the weird issue is that you can open the PDF using Acrobat Reder or Acrobat Pro without any problem! So it looks to us that the PDF is OK, but in fact it is not!

It happens when there is a problem within the PDF, such as a missing cross-referencing. Such files are commonly called ‘dirty PDFs’. A sign of this faulty PDFs is that when you open one of these PDF in Acrobat Reader and want to close it, the program prompts: “Do you want to save changes to … before closing?” although you have not changed anything! Similar condition happens when you want to print these dirty PDFs.

To find out if your PDF file is corrupted or dirty, you can use one of free online tools such as ‘PDF onilne’. This website can analyse your PDF and tell you if your file is healthy or corrupted.

Here are two error messages that it returned for one of my dirty PDF files:

  • The ‘xref’ keyword was not found or the xref table is malformed.

  • The “endobj” keyword is missing.

Hence I am able to open this file with Acrobat reader, read or print it without any problem.

However, I still don’t know how to repair a corrupt or dirty PDF. Any idea or solution would be appreciated.
