I’ve often encountered situations where EndNote isn’t able to generate a correct reference in the bibliography and/or footnote. The normal solution would be to convert the document to plain text and make the amendments manually, but this can only be done at the final stage since links to EndNote are lost once the document is convereted to plain text. To avoid this, I’ve amended some styles so that the Generic Reference Type displays a specific field (e.g. Custom 1) exactly as entered in the bibliography and/or footnote configuration. This generally works quite well, but sometimes records are imported with the Generic Reference Type and have to be changed accordingly. It would be nice if EndNote could introduce a new reference type which could be used for this purpose, so that complete bibliography and/or footnote references could be entered manually in an appropriately labelled field and displayed as entered for those tricky references which EndNote cannot cope with.
