Tablet support (Ipad, Kindle), paperless libraries and cloud computing

Hi Jason, add me to your beta testing. Thanks,

Hi, Jason! I would also be willing to participate in your beta testing. Thank you!

Is there any specific release  time for the tablet version of Endnote?

I’m looking forward to it so much!

And  the update of  the development news is so slow!

Any update on when to expect the iPad app?

Tablet updates fast, but here keeps silent.

No news for tablet version post.

What about win8 verion  project?

We plan to start beta testing of the EndNote iPad app by next month and have the app ready for release next year. As details develop, I will be sure to share them here.

Jason Rollins, the EndNote Team

Hi Jason,

It’s been a few years, is there any progress on this? I would love to get a Kindle to cut down on my paper-toting, but it won’t be any good without EndNote. The combination of EndNote and Kindle would change my life… please tell me you have something in beta testing.

Thanks,

Elyse

For the Kindle we have had only a handful of requests for either EndNote support or a dedicated App - versus the thousands we have had for an iPad app. It may be possible to use the web version of EndNote on the new Kindle Fire’s Silk web browser but I have not personally tried this.

We are always listening to customer input so as interest in the new Kindle grows, we will look more closely at options for ways to enable EndNote use on that device.

It should be time for the ipad endnote…I am seriously thinking of migrating to Sente…

are you in need of beta testers? I’m available.

I suggest you PM them and NOT put your email in a public forum unless you are interested in all kinds of spam?

What is the status of endnote for ipad?

Thanks,

Kirk

We are working on the EndNote iPad app that will be available later this year. In the meantime, the web version of EndNote - www.myendnoteweb.com - works fine for viewing references and attached PDFs through a web browser on most mobile devices.

Jason: you claim that “We are working on the EndNote iPad app that will be available later this year. In the meantime, the web version of EndNote - www.myendnoteweb.com - works fine for viewing references and attached PDFs through a web browser on most mobile devices.”

This simply isn;'t true - firstly you can’t get at references through the web view of endnote web you get a text detail of the attachment but no access, secondly you then download the attachment to your phone to read. But if you want to annotate then what? How do you put it back?

If “works just fine” is Thomposn Reuters speak for “is pretty $*&^” then I’d agree with ‘fine’ but if you mean fine as in functional then you’re very wrong!

So it’s no sync but an app - what about Android users? Or is it only iOS users that are ‘worthy’ of support?

You mention “with the ability to transfer these files back and forth to the desktop.” but surely the point is that THAT IS A BROKEN MODEL - we need sync not the pre-web FTP model of ‘transfer’.

We need a cross-platform cloud-based solution not further fragmentation and segmentation.

It’s been 2 years since the original poster asked several questions. The one I’m most interested in is cloud storage of my EndNote library. I, like almost eveyone else in academia, have several computers at work and home. I want to be able to seamlessly transition from my work environment to my home office environment, or to a laptop computer if I’m traveling.

What I’ve read is that EndNote tech staff do NOT recommend using Dropbox because of the risk of file corruption. Ok, that’s fair enough, and fair warning. Thomson Reuters shouldn’t be responsible for what Dropbox may do. But what is the alternative? What is EndNote staff recommending for cloud based storage of the library? I really would like to see a clear answer to this question. Are we going to see it in X6?

I agree with SteveWright’s comments. I’m starting a new writing project that needs bibliographic software support, and I’m starting to get comfortable with RefWorks, which is cloud based program that my university offers. I used ProCite for a book I wrote a decade ago, then I swtiched to EndNote, but I’m getting tired of worrying about where the library resides, and having to make sure that I can get it on whichever computer I happen to be using. The model of having all of one’s critical files and software on one desktop is a 1980s model of computing. My workflow requires synchronization, or better yet, cloud computing, so that I can do my job from any computer that has an internet connection, which is every computer I use.

EndNote has gone down the path of adding functionality in areas like PDF storage, which I personally don’t find to be all that useful. PDFs that I read are online anyway, all I need is a link to pull them up as needed. I don’t need to store them myself. I would find cloud based storage of the library to be a far more useful direction for this software development to go.

I am happy to report that we have something in the works for synchronization and cloud storage right now.  Please look for a formal announcement about this in the next few months.

Thank you, Mathilda. It’s badly needed. I hope it’s part of the X6 release.

It’s been 2 years, please define “something on the works”. Do you have a beta or just this poor old dusty thread? Furthermore, I would like to put forward the question of windows 8 or especially windows RT for tabletts (as the support for Office documents in ipad is extremely poor)… Have you thought about that?

EndNote for Windows RT would be very helpful, considering Windows Surface RT comes with Office 2013. Please, consider implementing Cite While You Write for Windows Surface RT.
