Trouble Syncing EndNote Library Across Devices

Hi everyone,

I’m having some trouble syncing my EndNote library across multiple devices and could really use some guidance. I primarily use EndNote 20 on my Windows laptop, but I also have it installed on my desktop and occasionally access my library via EndNote Online. Lately, I’ve noticed that changes made on one device don’t always reflect on the others, even after I manually sync.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Ensuring I’m logged into the same EndNote account on all devices.
  • Manually clicking “Sync” under Preferences → Sync.
  • Checking my internet connection to rule out network issues.
  • Running the “Recover Library” function in case of database corruption.
  • Resetting my sync settings by clearing my library from EndNote Online and re-uploading.

Despite all this, I still face inconsistencies—some references are missing, while others don’t update correctly. I’ve also seen occasional error messages but haven’t been able to pinpoint the exact cause.

Has anyone experienced similar issues? If so, what worked for you? Are there any known bugs or settings I might be overlooking? I’d appreciate any troubleshooting tips or best practices to keep my library consistent across devices.

I recommend reaching out to the endnote support folks. Is it possible you have an “expired” version of endnote? I believe the sync functions don’t work after 3 yrs or so…
