After no reply to my last post, getting the run around in my universities library and trying uninstall and reinstall a few times I found a Mac forum with someone with the same issue as myself. The answer was that X1 is not compatible with pages 09 and that X2 is needed. Is this true?
Yes, compatibility with Pageswas added in version X2. But if you are going to upgrade, I recommend getting the most recent version. Also from forum discussions, the integration is not as flexible as integration with Word.

Unfortunately my university only supports X1, I will try and get a copy of X2 from IT otherwise it will be back to working in word
