Alternate fields in a template

Dear helpful community members,

do you know whether there is a way in Endnote to create alternations between fields within one template?

An example for the Style “Bills”:

Short Title Title [Year]

Can I create a template the way that if there is no short title, it puts just the title

and if there is a short title, it doesn’t put the title?

Or do I have to put a short title for every object in my library?

Help is much appreciated!

I think Endnote is set up to do this.  It states, in the help file, “If an EndNote style is configured to use the Short Title field, and that field is empy for a particular reference, the normal Title field is used instead.” 

so have you tried it?  I think it just needs to look like this:

Short Title [Year]
