APA 6th Website Reference

When I reference a website, the bit before the URL appears as: “from” [all lower case], rather than “Retrieved from”. How can I change this?

For example:

ABS. (2012). Australian demographic statistics. from http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/Lookup/3101.0Main+Features1Jun%202012?OpenDocument

It looks like the “Web Page” bibliography template is linking “Retrieved” with “Access Date”.  This means “Retrieved” will appear only when there’s a date in the Access Date field - I suspect that’s why only “from” is displayed in your example.

To correct this you’ll need to modify the APA 6th’s bibliography template.

  1. Go to EndNote toolbar, select Edit > Output Styles > Edit “APA 6th”. The APA 6th dialog box is now displayed on-screen.

  2. In the left column of the dialog box locate the Bibiliography section then click “Templates”.

  3. Locate the problematic template (Web Page) and make the following changes (the diamond represents inserting the Link Adjacent Text command). When done, exit the output style dialog box which will save the changes to a new file (APA 6th Copy). Adjust both EndNote and MS Word to use the APA 6th Copy style file.

    Change from:      | Retrieved◊Access Date|,◊Access Year|,◊from◊URL

    Change to:          | Retrieved from◊URL

Thank you for the response!

I just tried the: Change to: | Retrieved from◊URL

However when I go to save/exit it creates a dialogue box with style name: “APA 6th Copy”, and when I select Save, it creates another dialogue box “APA 6th Copy Copy” and every time I click Save it adds another Copy to the end, and won’t actually let me save the changes.

See the attached image referencing the following steps:

  1. After modifying the APA 6th output style just click the “X” in the upper-right hand corner of the dialog box.

  2. A second dialog box appears on-screen: “Save changes to the EndNote style APA 6th before closing”. Click YES.

  3. The “Save As” dialog box appears on-screen. Click YES which saves your changes to  new output style: APA 6th Copy.

It doesn’t work - every time I press save I just get additional dialogue boxes appearing. See attached.

Your screenshot shows the correct dialog boxes that appear when saving changes to the output style.  If you’ve been clicking OK for each dialog box and getting nowhere:

  1. Is the output style being saved to a folder/location on the hard driver that isn’t write-protected? To check the location of the Styles Folder go to the EndNote toolbar, select Edit > Preferences. Click “Folder Locations” and check the path location of the Style Folder. The path directory should be in a location which isn’t write-protected.

  2. If the path location is correct (i.e., not write-protected), test whether you can modify and save a different output style. If you can do so it may mean there’s a problem with the APA 6th file and you should download and install another file (To download a new APA 6th output style go to the EndNote toolbar, select Help > Web Styles Finder.)

If you are unable to save the different output style this would suggest the file is being saved to an improper location (i.e., write protected).

  1. What version of EndNote are you using and your computer OS?  Are you running the updated version of EndNote - see this URL for list of software updates: http://endnote.com/downloads/available-updates

BTW, in case you need it here’s the APA 6th output style with the Web Page modification you described.

APA 6th Copy_Tom.ens (62.6 KB)

Thank you!!!

I was able to copy that file to C:\Program Files\EndNote X6\Styles, and it worked perfectly!

I couldn’t tell if that folder was write-protected, but it could well be, since it’s my PC at uni.

I’m running Windows 7, X6 (but possibly not the updated version).

Anyway it works now. Thanks!
