Cancel reference edits

Just new here, using Endnote X5. There was a confirmation dialogue when finished editing a reference that annoyed me, so I put a cross in the option ‘don’t show me again’. But now I can not cancel my changes anymore. Is there a way to get the dialogue back again or a way to cancel your changes?

If you still have a reference window open, you can “revert reference” from the File menu of Endnote.  Unfortunately if you close the reference, it is autosaved and there is no Undo function.

There is no way to change this back from within the EndNote program once you’ve checked that box. However, if you really want it back, you can alter this behavior through your Windows Registry.

Please note that all editing of your Windows Registry is performed at your own risk.

To make this change, make sure EndNote is closed, and then do the following:

  1. Access your Windows Registry as appropriate for your Windows system. (Just follow the fist couple steps shown here for your system, enough to get the Registry Editor to open, then stop and follow the rest of my steps below.)

  2. Browse to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ISI ResearchSoft\EndNote\Preferences

  1. Click the File menu and choose Export. Save this somewhere as a backup, in case of problems.

  2. In the Preferences key, locate the subkey called ShowSaveDialog. Right-Click on this and choose Modify.

  3. Change the Value from F to T. Click Ok.

Restart EndNote. It should now show the dialog again.

It would be great to include something in the preferences, so it could be more easily reactivated.
