ENDNOTE 2025 Online Search

In ENDNOTE 2025, on the desktop version (windows) on the left Panel at the bottom, there is a section for “Online Search.” These are currently in the list for online search:

Jisc Library Hub Discovery
Library of Congress
PubMed (NLM)
Web of Science Core Collection

Is there a way to add “Google Scholar” to the list of online search tools?

Thank you for your help with this.

You can see the other “connection files” available, by selecting the + sign, but according to this thread: (Google Scholar Connection File? - #12 by kam59) I believe the answer is still the same as circa 2008 (I copy below the answer from that thread given in 2013 from a Thompson developer).

“EndNote is a z39.50 browser, which means it can connect to z39.50 servers. Google Scholar doesn’t have a z39.50 server, so there is technically nothing to connect to at this time. As soon as that is possible, we will be all over it, but until then, one must use their direct export to EndNote feature, which is the next best thing…”

I read :

and thought, “all over it? Really?” then I saw that the answer was from 17 YEARS ago and repeated 12 YEARS ago. Sadly, I have found they put as much into maintenance of this as they do other aspects of Endnote. There are no emails when they update, or correct, the connections list. That said you can find the current set, individually and as a group download https://endnote.com/downloads/connections/

When I find a broken link, I have found the fastest way of doing it is t fix it myself. A few years ago got quite good at editing and creating the connection files. In several cases I had to contact the libraries concerned, who were usually very helpful. However, these were “proper” libraries, with real librarians. Not part of a huge multinational with no easy way of contacting a human who can do something.

I can’t imagine it would be difficult for Google to add a z39.50 interface, but why would they when you can “google it”. They are the standard…

That aside, it is well worth learning how to use the Ednnote connection manager. Unfortunately, I believe there is a new system on the way. Though it will be a long while before anyone drops the z39.50 system (I hope) because I won’t be moving to the new system with Endnote.
