Endnote 21 interface needs work

I have been a long-time user of Endnote, most recently version 19, with a large database. I recently installed version 21, and I have to say that after 1/2 hour of use I reverted to version 19. The new interface wastes so much space on the screen, icons are way too large, too much space between references, and many of the simple time-saving interface features in version 19 are either gone or hard to access. Just being able to click on a reference to select it, see the entire formatted reference in a small window at the bottom of the screen, and being able to double click on a reference to quickly open the entire record for editing was great. And for me, the black color on the left panel is not good. There are many options for formatting citations, but almost none for the human interface. If you add in options to change the color and spacing and behavior of the interface I’d reconsider, but until then I’m sticking with version 19.

I agree with your assessment. The reference panel window is far too large, it makes it difficult to read the reference list panel.
Ideally the size of the reference panel should be flexible so it can be reduced to a tiny area. It is a step backwards. I teach how to use EndNote and this crowded layout makes it very difficult for beginners to see where their references are.
Unfortunately I don’t have a choice about the version I use.

I fully agree with your observations and remarks.
It’s exactly the reason I reverted back to version X9, after trying both version 20 and 21.

Hopefully the recently announced version 25 will have an option to adapt the interface more like it was in version X9.

I won’t be upgrading unless some of the problems introduced in 21 are fixed and some of the ting removed in 20/21 are replaced in the current version before they ask me for any more money.

yeah. ditto no “upgrade” to what we used to have, no money, and no recommendation that our institution upgrades.

That will make the difference. I think that they are relying on the big institutes to “automatically” upgrade, making Endnote a cash cow. They make some small changes for the new version at minimal cost, so there is a list of “new and exciting” things to list.

Eventually, the institutions will stop upgrading which is when they will stop doing Endnote, but until then it is income from the site licences for minimal effort.
