The only fix for X5 and earlier, to my knowledge (and no comment on whether they plan to patch earlier versions as of yet, anyway) is those proposed earlier (way down here in this thread), to kill the appleeventsd daemon.
Hi,
I have a new Mac Book 13" with OS 10.8.4. Endnote X6.0.2 seems to freeze occasionally, when I select particular references in the library and not on others. Closing the Appleeventsd process does not help. Any suggestions? I would assume that whatever problems existed with 10.8.2 should have been resolved by now…
Thanks
Hello, endnoteuserwis:
That definitely does not sound like a related issue. If it is happening when you select particular references in the library, that suggests issues with library damage.
Please recover your library as we describe here:
If that does not help, I recommend contacting Technical Support directly.
I am having the same problem!
Hello, nhd:
Which problem? The -1712 error is now resolved for users both by an update to EndNote AND an update from Apple. If you are experiencing another issue, I recommend making a separate thread with the details of your issue or contacting us at Technical Support:

I apologize for the inconvenience.
I’m having the error -1712 problem with Word 2011 (version 14.4.3), ENP X6 Build 8318, and OS X 10.9.5. It just started today but was working fine last week.
I’m trying to decide whether to upgrade to ENP X7 or go with Zotero. This error does not inspire me to stick with ENP.
I was having this same problem, and found a solution by deleting all the invisible files in my working directory and desktop. There were quite a few apple ‘.*’ files and microsoft ‘~$’ files, not sure which was the problem.
I have this problem several operating systems later (Catalina, latest). Why has no progress been made??
Hello James,
The Error -1712 is not specifically an EndNote error.
The issue is actually caused by an Apple Event Timeout.
Often, such issues can be resolved by simply restarting the computer, if it hasn’t been restarted in a while.
(I know I rarely restart my Macintosh.)
Alternately, if you’re running a substantial number of applications in the background (this includes a Browser window with a a lot of open tabs), or running other programs that take substantial amounts of CPU time, this could also create a scenario where this issue will happen.
If you’re actually using EndNote X6, and getting this message when trying to trigger EndNote to open from Word, the problem is caused by a lack of compatibility with Catalina, which currently requires EndNote X9.3.x.
I do hope this helps!
Thanks,
Steve
