Insert Citiation is inactive

I am using word 2008 and the trial version x4 vor Mac.

My Problem is, that the “Insert Citation” button at the top of the Endnote window as well as the complete CWYW pulldown menue is inactive (gray). If i try to drag and drop the citations in the word document is just shows them like {Smith2005#4}.

I tried to look for patches or updates, but there are no for word or Endnote X4.

It sounds like the Cite While You Write commands are not loading within Microsoft Word on your computer.   To configure the two programs to work together:

Make sure you have at least the SP1 (12.1.x) update for Microsoft Word 2008 installed. You can download the update from Microsoft, or you can use the Update feature for Word by clicking on the Help menu and then Check for Updates. You can check if you have version 12.1.x installed by clicking on the Word menu and selecting About Word.

The simplest way to get the tools to appear is to open EndNote, and go to the EndNote menu. Select “Customizer” from the EndNote menu. Check the box in front of the “Cite While You Write” option. Click next until the Customizer is finished. Open a library. Then open Word and check the Tools menu for the EndNote submenu.

If after installing the Word 2008 SP1 update and following the instructions above the tools still do not appear:

  1. Close Word and EndNote.

  2. Open your hard drive and go to Applications:EndNote X4:Cite While You Write.

  3. Copy the file “EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle” by highlighting the file and going to “Edit > Copy.”

  4. Go to the folder Applications:Microsoft Office 2008: Office:Startup:Word and paste the file, “Edit Paste.”

Note: In non-English versions of Word, the folder named “Startup” may be called “Start” or be in the localized     language of Word.

  1. Start Word, go to “Word > Preferences” and click on “File Locations.”

  2. If the Startup folder is not set, highlight “Startup” and click on “Modify”. Select the folder Applications:Microsoft Office

2008: Office:Startup:Word and click “Choose.”

  1. Click “OK” and close Word.

  2. Start EndNote and then start Word.

After following these steps, the Cite While You Write commands should be appearing inside Word.  Please let me know if these steps work for you.

Dear Jimmy,

I am trying to use Cite while you write in a Mac, using Endnote X2 and it doesn’t work.

I’ve done the following:

  1. Installed the patch X2.02

  2. Copied the 2008 bundle as per instructions

  3. Copied the 2008 .dot files to user:application support:endnote

Only when I open word with one of the templates I’m able to see the endnote toolbar, but when press any of the buttons, I get no response at all (it might be worth mentioning that when I open the template I get a message about an existing macro).

Could you please help me out???

Thank you,
