Insert different punctuation between multiple citations in one footnote (how to)

I am using Endnote XII with CWYW in Word for Mac 2008. If I have more than one citation in a footnote, CWYW consolidates it into one. That’s OK, but it only separates them with commas. I want to change this to semi-colons or full stops but can’t find any way to edit this punctuation between citations. If I add the semi-colon as a suffix, Endnote still inmserts a comma as well. I cannot find anything in preferences that allows me to set this either. Alternatively, how do I prevent Endnote from consolidating the multiple citations in a footnote - is it just by ensuring there’s a space before importing the next one?

simple, if you open the style you are using, and look at the Footnotes, templates option, at the top there is box to insert the character you want between multiple citations.  See the attached image where the Chicago style uses a semi-colon.

Thanks but for some weird reason I can’t scroll/click onto and edit the Style for citations, bibliography, footnotes, or figures and tables, only the single items listed above them. I have never been able to do this (using X2) - how can I activate this?

So, in endnote (not Endnote Web), you choose Edit>Output Styles>edit “the stylename you want to alter”.  Then, does it show the options with a plus in front of them, or are the lists expanded?  If not expanded, click on the Plus sign, and you should see the expanded list for the individual item, in this case in front of  “Footnotes”.  Then you just click on the word “template”  and you should see a similar listing to the image I attatched.

Make your change to the Multiple Citation separator and tthen ensure you save it to a new name.  In your document, format bibliography (or format paper in some versions), and change the style to your new name and click okay (ensuring that on the third tab, CWYW is enabled, if you want it automatically formatted as you write).

If that isn’t working there must be something wrong with the installation and should should call Tech Support. There is a link on that page that takes you to all the tech support numbers in different countries.

P.S. In the meantime, you could attach your style here and one of us other users could tweak it for you, if that would help?

There are no plus signs and the lists are not expanded… sounds like I need tech support then. Meanwhile, how do I attach the style and have you tweak it for me? Do I need to find the style system file within Endnote, or is there another way?

Wierd.

You need to click the Browse button after the Add attatchment box which is below the text box when you reply here to a message.  Then navigate to where your styles are located - I am not sure where that is on a Mac.

I found the style files in Applications, Endnote, but my modified style file was not there, only the original one it was based on. My style appears in the list and I use it all the time, so I’m mystified… So then I went back to the original style and experimented to see if I could edit that, and I could. I can’t recall how I created my style it was so long ago, but that seems to be the problem area. What is the coreect way to create my own output style by modifying another? If I do it again perhaps I will be able to edit it.
