Page numbers in references changing when merging documents

Hi,

trying to help our students with the following problem (unsuccessful so far…)

Using EndNotex4 and Word 2010 they are to merge several documents in to one. Output style is “Numbered”.

They have a lot of references from the same article in a reference work, and the references are set up with page numbers to point to certain tables and figures. They would like to keep it like that (no different from having an article with pagenumbers, I’d think?).

When merging the documents, the page numbers in the bibliography changes. Why?

We have done the import of the references from the new documents as advised (importing traveling library etc…)

Suggestions??

Kind regards,

Ellen

Just to clarify are you saying these page numbers which “point to certain tables and figures” are stored in the “Pages” field within the reference type template? Do these numbers involve a continous or broken series of page numbers?  Is there a noticeable pattern as to references where the page numbers change or do the changes occur for all of the bibliographic entries?

One thing you might try testing is to create a customized field that is designated to hold page numbers meant to point to certain tables and figures (instead of using the Pages field). Then modify the output style’s template to include the customized field.

Also there’s an update for X4 which upgrades the program to X4.0.2:

http://www.endnote.com/support/ENX401_Win_updater.asp

Endnote defines a record by the Author Title and Year fields.  If these fields are the same for each of the references, Endnote is going to assume they are duplicates and merge them.  I am not sure if you can overcome this unless you edit the preferences to remove the formating preference to merge duplicates.
