I am using Endnote 21.0.1 on the Mac. I need to include PMID in my citations in the body of the text. However, when I look through my library I do not see a field for PMID, even in 2024 references. Is there a setting in the library I need to change to get this field displayed?
the PMID field is not always visible by default in EndNote, mainly in custom reference layouts or if the import style did not include it properly.
- Enable the PMID field in the Library display
- Go to EndNote > Preferences > Display Fields
- select PMID from the dropdown menu
- Click OK => PMID in your library view.
- Check if your import filter or reference style supports PMID
- try importing directly from PubMed using the .nbib format, then open with EndNote. That usually captures the PMID accurately

customize the output style for display the PMID in in-text citations
- Go to Edit > Output Styles > Edit [Your Style]
- Under Citations > Templates, add the field
PMIDmanually where you want it. - Save the style with a new name and apply it.
In mine, it seems it is the number in the “Accession Number” field – You can edit the name of the field to reflect PMID. A different unique identifier number might be used in that field if it comes from a different database. – I use that number instead of the record number in my preferences in the endnote temporary citation as it is more stable.
I don’t see PMID as an option in the Dropdown menus when I click on one of the column fields.
Is there another name I should be looking for?

When you import from Pubmed, Endnote captures the PMID in the field “Accession Number” – while you can edit the field type of journal reftype to reflect that (edit preferences, modify reftype) – it can mess up things, you will need to edit the output styles too, and it has to be tranferred from computer to computer. I just “know” where it lives.
