Problem in sorting author names in Library

I am using Endnote X7.4.

I am having trouble sorting author names in the Library window. The sort works on last names and on the first letter of the first name. But after that, names are not sorted alphabetically. For example, Thompson, David comes after Thompson, Dorothy.

This same problem was reported by a user on 08-03-2008.

There was a reply on 02-13-2009:

We’ve just had the same problem the solution for us was

sort (from the tool bar)-> sort by author first -> set to a-Z

and then the key change was to change Sort language from “System Default” to “English”

for some reason even though the system default language was English we still needed to set it here.

I’ve tried this, and it doesn’t work.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I also use Endnote X7.4  but haven’t encountered any sort issue with the library. Have you checked the Author field of the problematic records to see if there is an extra blank space in between either: 1) the first and last names, or 2) following the comma if the name is in last-first name order. The preceding blank space affects the sort order as it will be sorted first then followed by the last name.
