I want to insert some references within a Figure. However, when I insert them they do not go into the order of my text, but start from reference number 1…
so instead of coming up as reference no. 40 as it should be, it puts me as reference no.1…
Can anyone please help?

this is a feature of Word when you put figures into textboxes.

(The quickest way may be to Cheat and as a last step before submitting, move the citation from the figure legend into the text itself near where the figure will appear, and then manually type that number into the figure legend and then format the citation itself as hidden text.)
