The “journal name” field has disappeared from the “Journal” ref type. How do I get it back?
What do you mean by “template”? The template that is used in an output style when you are formating a reference, or in the records when you are entering data?
The problem’s in the output style. The “Journal” field had disappeared so it can’t appear in any output templates. So in formatted bibliographies, there is nothing where a journal name should go --this usually means showing the title and going straight to the volume.
To further clarify, let X = any journal style in Style Manager. If we try to edit the template like this:
Edit > OutputStyles > EditX >Bibliography/Templates
we get a list of output templates. In any ref type that should have “journal” in it, it instead says “*INVALID FIELD*”. If I click “Insert Field” then in the list of fields it does notinclude “journal.”
“Journal” has disappeared from the program, at least on my laptop (this problem does not occur on my desktop).
It appears that the Reference Types Table has been amended or corrupted to remove that field.
In EndNote, click on Edit>Preferences, and select Reference Types.
Make sure that the default reference type is showing as “Journal Article” and then click on the “Modify Reference Types” button and you will see the fields defined for journal articles.
For the “Secondary Title” in the Generic column, you should see a corresponding “Journal” field in the “Journal Article” column. If not, insert it. Then click OK to return to the Preferences and OK again to exit the Preferences.
And since it working on your labtop, you should be able to export your Ref Types from there and import them to the desktop version. Instructions from the X2 program help:
Sharing Your Reference Type Table
An EndNote user can share a customized reference type table with another EndNote user. Keep in mind, however, that when you do this, you completely replace the recipient’s existing reference type table.
First, export the reference type table you wish to share:
-
From the donor’s user account, start EndNote.
-
From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
-
Click the Reference Types option in the list of preferences.
-
Under Reference Type Table, click Export to display a file dialog.
-
Name the file, select a folder where you will be able to find it later, and click Save. EndNote will append an .xml suffix to the file name.
-
Copy the exported .xml file to the recipient’s computer.
Then, import the table for a different user:
Note: Replacing another user’s reference type table overwrites all changes to his/her current reference type table.
-
From the recipient’s user account, start EndNote.
-
From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
-
Click the Reference Types option in the list of preferences.
-
Under Reference Type Table, click Import to display a file dialog.
-
In the file dialog, locate, highlight, and Open the .xml file that was previously exported.
