I have had some luck using Endnote 7.5.1.1 and Word 2016 (version 15.21.1) when Word is in compatibility mode.

Endnote 7.5.1.1 seemed to work okay with earlier versions of Word 2016 too, as long as Word was in compatibility mode.

Note: I use Mac OS X 10.11.4 on an old Macbook A1181, just in case it makes any difference.

Endnote 7.5.1.1 will still crash, though, maybe once-a-week.

When Endnote does crash you may have to force quit Word and Endnote and reload the Endnote Add-ins. However, until an official fix is released this may have to do, if you want to use Word 2016.

I can attest to the fact that Endnote 7.5.1.1 works flawlessly with Word 2011.

Downgrade if you can. If you canā€™t downgrade, try out compatibility mode and save your work frequently.

I was getting the same problem with EndNote 7.5 continuosly crashing with Word 2016 in window 10.

I have solved the problem running both endnote and word as administrator.

Iā€™ve been having the same frustrating issues on my laptop with Endnote X7.5 and Word 2016(x64) in Windows 10 x64. After trying all the suggestions bu to no avail, I found a workaround myself:

(1) Tick ā€œDisable hardware graphics accelerationā€ in Word menu Fileā€“>Optionsā€“>Advancedā€“>Display.

(2) Again in Word menu, click Endnote X7ā€“>Preferences, tick off ā€œEnable Instant Formatting on new Word documentsā€.

After this, you will only see the field code whenever you insert a reference. You can click ā€œUpdate Citations and Bibliographyā€ after finish your document.

It still crashes once a while, but is kind of usable. Hope this helps.

I have exactly the same problem , and I compared your error message to mine, they are nearly identical.

I finally tracked my problem down to a single paragraph, where I had inserted a comment just before the problem started.

I deleted the comment, and the problem disappears.

Has this issue been resolved? Iā€™m a new Endnote 7.7 user on my Mac (10.10.5) using MS Word version 15.32, and have been impressed with Endnoteā€™s versatility and user-friendliness UNTIL TODAY!

Suddenly, for no apparent reason, no matter when I try to insert a citation into ANY DOCUMENT in MS Word, it crashes!!

Iā€™ve uninstalled and reinstalled Endnote, played with the preferences in the MS Word Endnote ribbon, and nothing is helping.

PLEASE HELP!! Iā€™m literally handicapped now and unable to progress any of my university assignmentsā€¦

I am not sure if this is the same problem I am experiencing.

My Word crashes when I use shortcut ā€˜Alt+2ā€™ to insert a reference. This crash only happens if I do ā€˜Alt+2ā€™ in Word, but not in EndNote. I figures, at least in my case, the issue is completely gone with uninstalling/disabling Mendeleyā€™s MS Word plugin.

So, if you have the Mendeley plugin installed, try uninstall it and see if that helps.

Iā€™ve got exactly the same problem with ENDNOTE8 and WORD 2016 - where can I get ENDOTE 7 as I have several Uni assignments due and am underwater here!!!

having the same problem, still no fix for me.

This problem made me busy for long time, the problem has not been sloved even when I have upgarded my office from 2010 to 2016.

I have conculede that the problem is in the right clcik menu, the MS word crashes when I select Manage Citation(s)> difeernet formats from the right clcick menu.

Howver, the MS word didnā€™t crushĀ  when I change the formt style using the Endnote toolbar, by clciking onĀ  "Edit & Manage Citation(s)>Edit citation tab> then selctgin the formatting Authot (year) > then press OK.
