Word2010 ERROR "The requested member of the collection does not exist"

Hi,

I am only just learning to use endnote. I have X4 with the most up to date version and microsoft word 2010. I started writting a thesis report using only word2010 referencing. The system is terrible and want to convert it to endnote. I have imported a libray and change it in endnote and want to update the document and i get a various sequence of error messages:

In word i get an error “The requested member of the collection does not exist”

i then switch to endnote and get " this action cannot be completed becasue the “document -Microsoft Word non-commercial use” program is not responding choose switch to and correct the problem

I switch back and have the same original error i press ok then it does nothing…

What is wrong??? and what can i do to fix the error???

Just checking - did you follow the manual’s instructions (below)? And after converting the Word citations to EndNote, did you replace the original Word citations in the document with the EndNote citations?  It sounds like you’re maintaining both types within the document but the Word citations should be replaced with the EndNote references.

Converting Word 2007 and 2010 Citations to EndNote (pp. 175-176 or search using Help)

Word 2007and 2010 includes a Reference tab, where you can use commands to insert Microsoft Word

footnote or endnote citations. These footnote and endnote citations are not used directly by EndNote’s Cite

While You Write feature (although you can insert an EndNote citation within a Word footnote). If you have

citations already entered into Word, you can copy the reference information into an EndNote library and then

convert the Word citations into EndNote Cite While You Write citations.

Note: The Word citation conversion features requires that your computer have the Microsoft .Net Framework installed.

To export Word 2007 and 2010 citations to an EndNote library:

1. Open the Word document that contains the citations.

2. On the EndNote tab, in the Tools group, select

Export to EndNote and then Export Word 2007 Citations.

To export the Word 2007 and 2010 master citation list to an EndNote library:

1. Open the Word document that contains the citations.

2. On the EndNote tab, in the Tools group, select

Export to EndNote and then Export Word 2007 Master List.

To convert Word 2007 and 2010 citations to EndNote citations within the document:

1. Open the Word document that contains the citations.

2. On the EndNote tab, in the Bibliography group, select

Convert Citations and Bibliography and then Convert Word 2007 Citations to EndNote.

.

Thank you for your reply. No hadnt followed this exactlly I exported fine but when I try and convert the references i get the same "The requested member of the collection does not exist" error in word2010.

The problem could be with the manner of export but here’s another question. When you installed EndNote did you set it up as the default citation manager?   You might try backing up your document and EndNote library, then uninstall EndNote, restart the computer then re-install EndNote and select it as the default citation manager.

I have read a few other forums saying that i should unformat my word document and exit both endnote and word and re open and try again.

Do you know how to unformat the word document?

The unformatting/reformatting usually refers to documents with EndNote citations. If your document has the EndNote citations you could try updating them first; if that doesn’t work, you could convert them to unformatted citations then update them.  Both are located in the EndNote tab in the MS Word ribbon.

Also, to clarify, did you use the “Convert Word Citations to EndNote” feature?  This is located in the EndNote tab on the MS Word ribbon - look forr the “Convert Citations and Bibliography” option - click the tiny pull-down menu.

In your Word document on the Endnote tab click on ‘Convert Citations and Bibliography’ (from the miidle box). Then choose ‘Convert to Unformatted Citations.’

On NO account choose ‘Convert to Plain Text’ as this will disassociate your document from Endnote altogether.

EDIT: I see CrazyG beat me to it!
