Can’t send serial information in, as I have a volume license version from my university. None of the workarounds seem to work. This is a real problem

Did you try uninstalling X4, deleting the beta Word 2011 bundle, thenre-installing X4 and trying to apply the update?
I did not install the previous Beta version. My version of X4 is also from my university; however, I was given a serial no. and product key when I ordered it, which X4.0.2 does not recognize. I hope this problem can be remedied quickly.
I have exactly the same problem on my mac. I’m using Endnote X4 (bld 6695) with university license.
The update was not successful.
When I tried to install the demo version of X4 (4.0.2) the program didn’t accept my serial number, that I used for the older X4 version.
Also the installation of the update using the demo version of Endnote was not working.
I wanted re-install the Word2011 public beta bundle, but this download is not longer available.
Is no other solution?
For all those who have reported a problem installing the Mac X4.0.2 update on this thread, can you comment on whether or not you installed a disk space saving application after the original X4 installation, such as CleanMyMac?

No. I installed X4, installed the update, uninstalled X4, and then installed X4.0.2.
I do have cleanmymac installed. However, after removing it form my computer, I reinstalled x4, then tried 4.0.2 updater, still not working.
I tried to clean the harddisk with cleanmymac, but it is still the same problem. I re-installed Endnote several times,but nothing changed. The demo-version of Endnote 4.0.2 is also not working, since this version is not accepting our universities serial number.
I hope that you can quickly find a solution.
Just to clarify, a university serial number will not work for the demo version. If that is your situation, you must reinstall the original X4 installer, then try to run the update. Avoid using CleanMyMac during this process.
The question about the CleanMyMac utility is to determine if all those experiencing this problem were using it or something like it. One case does indicate that the utility cleaned up X4 files that caused the updater to detect an unresolvable discrepancy and exit.

So when is the fix coming out? I had to uninstall both x4 and Office 2011 and go back to 2008.
Are you reinstalling X4 using a DMG that was on you computer when you ran CleanMyMac? If so, it’s very possible that cleaned files out of the dmg so reinstalling with that will not work. You need to download a new dmg from the source. It’s not clear from your posts whether you are using a site license where you have a serial but not a product key or you have a single license with a product key.
Regarding a fix, all indications are that the application folder was modified manually or through a utility whereby the updater could not reconcile the differences. There are two workarounds to address this. If you get your copy through an institution license (i.e., there’s a serial number but no product key), you should download a fresh version of the dmg, reinstall X4, then apply the update. If you have a product key, then install the X4.0.2 demo and use the product key to unlock it.
I believe I sent you a message asking for details based on your last post. If the workarounds above do not work, please respond to the email.

I’m not running any kind of compressor, disk saver or other such software. I’ve tried this on all of my macs— a mac mini at home, my office iMac and my brand new, practically factory stock macbook pro.
All running10.6.6
I’ve wiped all traces of Endnote from my machine, reinstalled the e-academy license version of X4 (with no beta bundle installed in Word 2011) and then attempted the 4.02 update with no luck—still tells me I have no version of X4.

Allan and others: I was experiencing the same issues you’ve described, and after a week on this forum I decided to call Endnote’s tech support line. They were able to solve the problem in about five minutes so I would recommend that you do the same. Good luck!
Hi, same problem for me.
I’m running an University license of Endnote X4 (Bld 6695) and deleted and reinstalled everything several times – no luck.
There is no CleanMyMac or similar software installed.
Could you please tell your developers to publish an EndNote X4 v4.0.2.1 package which is able to locate and update my installed X4?

Sven - Below is a summary of the possible scenarios:

Single Licenses, i.e., you have an X4 product key - If you receive an error that the update will not install, uninstall X4 and install the X4.0.2 demo (http://www.endnote.com/endemo.asp)) using your product key. This will install the full X4.0.2 version.

Site Licenses, i.e., you do not have a product key - There are two possible scenarios for site licenses.
A. The application folder has been modified since it was originally installed. In this case, you can uninstall X4, download the X4 installer from your institution and reinstall. Then apply the update.
B. If the update will not install after installing from a fresh copy of X4 DMG, the issue is in the institution’s DMG. You need to contact your institution about the issue so that they can provide a new DMG. They will have access to the X4.0.2 version and may be able to provide that, forgoing the need to apply the update. If you are unsure who to contact, send me a private message with your institution’s name and we will try to notify them.

Hi all,
I discovered that Microsoft Office 2011 14.1.0 Update (Critical Released on 14/12/11) is not compatible with EndNote X4.0.2. After the update is not longer possible to Cite While You Write Anymore, after update.
The only solution to date is to go through the harassing uninstallation steps to completely (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768).
Then reinstalling Office 2011 and avoid updating it!!. Then Endnote X4.0.2 Customizer will work fine.

This sometimes happens with a Word update. There is another post about the general issue here which provides tips to reinstall Cite While You Write - http://community.thomsonreuters.com/t5/EndNote-General/EndNote-X4-for-Mac-latest-word-2011-upgrade/m-p/19473/highlight/true#M5339. If these do not work, I recommend you contact Technical Support directly. I was able to use X4.0.2 Cite While You Write with Word 2011 and its last update without issue.

I am running a 2011 model MacBook Pro Version 10.6.8, Endnote x4, and microsoft office 2011 version 14.1.2.
I am unable to insert citations into my word documents. No endnote tabs show up in my word document, and the insert citations tab in endnote is dim and unable to be selected.
The endnote CWYW 2011.bundle file is located in my word startup folder. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled endnote numerous times.
When i run the updater the first time it locates endnote x4 and adds the CWYC 2011.bundle file to the word startup folder. However, the Bld remains 6695, not updated to 7031 and I am still unable to insert citations into my word documents. when i have attempted to run subsequent updates an error message reads: “This updater was unable to find any copies of EndNote X4.0.2 that require updating” and i am subsequently still unable to insert citations.
I am using a site license from Sydney University and thus have a serial number but no product key.
I do not have, nor have i ever had, cleanmymac or any other such program on my computer.
Issue # 2) When endnote is installed i receive messages every time i attempt to open or close documents reading “word could not fire event”. This problem only occurs when the CWYW 2011.bundle file is located in my word startup folder.
