I was wondering if it is possible to add a reference to the bibliography at the end of my Word document without citing it in the main text of the document.
I have a couple of articles which I have only cited within figure legends. I am required to provide my text as a Word document, and the figures (and their legends) in a separate PDF document. Removing the figure legend containing the citation from the Word document removes the reference to the article from the bibliography, since it is not cited anywhere else in the document.
Is there a way to add it so that it will not disappear next time I run Format Bibliography?
If it is numbered, insert the citation near where the figure would be, (if ordered by appearance), or near the end (if alphabetical) and format the text as hidden.
You can do the same if you are using a (author, year) citation style, or edit the citation to hide the author and hide the year, so it disappears from the text, via the endnote “Edit Citation” (right click in the citation) options.
Leanne is right of course but this is really just a work-around. What we need to do is implement an “In Bibliography Only” option. This is currently on our To Do list. And actually Apple has already implemented this in their EndNote CWYW functionality with their Pages word processor - see the attached screen shot.
Jason, I guess I always worry about wanting to delete, (or deleting by accident) something that is totally invisible, which is why I prefer the hidden text option (when working with cwyw on)!
I just finished a paper with about 100 references, each sited at the end of a sentence. I now find out that they don’t want them in the text, only as a list “further reading” at the end. The paper will be submitted electronically, so I am not sure about the 'hide text" option. Please give me any advice on how to format this, besides going in and by hand copying the reference and deleting the in text ref. Thanks. s
Easy solution. Edit the style so that there is nothing in the citation template. save as, and give it a unique name. Now reformat the paper and choose the new output style - they sould disappear and end up in the bibliography.
I am using v7 in a macbook air with word not pages. I cannot right click to find out how to hide. I am using Harvard style . I want to add the rest of my readings to my bibliography without citations in text. Is there a way i can do this?

Have you tried putting your cursor on the citation then selecting Edit & Manage Citation(s) from the Endnote tab in the MS Word toolbar? This will bring up the Edit & Manage Citations dialog box where you change the pull-down menu’s Default setting to: Show Only in Bibliography.
