Citation error in text

I am using a Mac (OS 10.6.5) and Word 2008 but since installing Endnote 4X citations in the text appear with author and date but followed by # and a three digit number. Prior to the installation of Endnote 4X only the author and date were entered in the main text. Can any one advise me?

Cite while you write is off.  you should manually format bibliography and turn on CWYW from the appropriate tab.

I’m sure that CWYW is on, but I am still encountering the problem.

not for that manuscript if you are getting a # in curley brackets.
