Citing URL and Access Date in bibliography

Hi - when I output my bibliography into a ‘plain text file’ it gives all the author and date info, etc but doesn’t show the URL or Access Date. How can I change the format of my bibliography to include these?

Thanks, Kate

You’ll need to modify the bibliography template in your output style to include the URL and Access Date fields. See this thread for an example using the Access Date but procedure is similar for adding the URL.

Thanks, but I don’t understand which toolbar: I can’t find anything with an ‘Edit’ command to change my output styles. Should this be in actual Endnote or on the toolbar of Word when using the plug-in. I’m confused!

Endnote is a complicated program because it is adaptable and has to achieve lots of different things.  But this makes its learning curve pretty steep in the beginning.  Let me try to parse your question to see what advice you need.

  1.  You are attempting to “export” a selection of citations into a file of its own rather working in word with a manuscript you want to insert citations in and create a bibliography? (Why are you exporting as “plain text”?)

  2. whether you are exporting or inserting citations into a paper and generating a bibliography, you need to select the appropriate output style.

 – In X7, the File>export dialog has a “file name” (best to change) “save as type” – plain text (.txt) but you might want to use the .rtf as it would retain html and other formatting, and the Output Style (Author-Date might be the default.  Then there is a tick box that you can designate that you only want to export the selected records.

– if you are inserting citations into a word document, it depends on the version of word as to where this style information is located.  there is either a toolbar or a ribbon - if it isn’t there, then there are knowlegebase FAQs that we can point you to that help you reinstall/install them.

  1. the output style is where the fields that are included for each of the references types you use, are defined.  If you are using an output style that doesn’t designate the URL and access date, they won’t be included.  If you are using Endnote Online rather endnote desktop - then you can’t alter this and will either  need to explore another output style that does or find out if your institution has an administrator who has this ability.  If you are using the desktop version of endnote, you can learn to edit the output style to conform with your requirements.  – In the short term if one of us other group members knows what you need in which style, we can often help you or “talk you” thru the changes needed.  The function is found in the desktop version under Edit>output style, edit “selected-style.ens”.  Once you get the hang of it, it isn’t to hard, but it can be a bit daunting for a new user.

Please note, that for the most part, those of us that respond are other users and, on occasion, a TR employee pops in (clearly defined by their login name and signature lilne).

Kate :

  1. Which EndNote output style are you using (e.g., APA 6th, Chicgo 16th Footnote)?

  2. Are you using the desktop version of EndNote or EndNote Web? [If you’re using the desktop version, go to the EndNote toolbar, select Edit > Output Styles > Edit [name of the output style.] See this thread for an example using the Access Date but procedure is similar for adding the URL.

Hi

I’m using EndNote online so it looks like I need to find an output style that designates URL and access date.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
