Create a default Reference Type Table without losing custom table

I created a custom reference type table about 8 years ago in a previous version of Endnote.  I’ve been using that custom table all these years but have a new client and need to create (recreate?) a new default reference type table that I can experiment with to see if I can do very minor tweaks to approximate the styles the client wants.  What is the best way to go about this?  My concern would be that selecting the “EndNote Defaults” button on the Reference Types window will overwrite my custom file without giving me a chance to save it with a new name.  Could I just make a copy of the xml table with a different name, import that, then click the “Endnote Defaults” button?  I wish the directions were a little more clear on how to handle having more than one Reference Type table.  Thanks.

First, export the reference type table you wish to preserve:

Start EndNote.
In Windows, from the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
In Mac OS X, from the EndNote menu, choose Preferences.
Click the Reference Types option in the list of preferences.
Under Reference Type Table, click Export to display a file dialog.
Name the file, select a folder where you will be able to find it later, and click Save.
EndNote will append an .xml suffix to the file name.

Later you can use these steps to restore the file:

Start EndNote.
In Windows, from the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
In Mac OS X, from the EndNote menu, choose Preferences.
Click the Reference Types option in the list of preferences.
Under Reference Type Table, click Import to display a file dialog.
In the file dialog, locate, highlight, and Open the .xml file that was previously exported.

You can also use these older steps:
You can make a copy of the current file by going to the following location :

Windows XP or 2000:
C:\Documents and Settings[Username]\Application Data\EndNote

Windows Vista or Windows 7 and Windows 8:
C:\Users[Username]\AppData\Roaming\EndNote

Username in this case would be your computer login name.

Note: If you cannot find the specified folder, your Windows preferences may be set to hide the folder. In the window go to Tools / Folder Options / View tab (if you do not see the menu on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, press the ALT key to see the menu) and make sure that “Show hidden files and folders” is selected.

On a MAC
You can make a copy of the current file by going to the following location :
Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Application Support:EndNote
To get to the Library folder in OS X 10.7 and later, Hold down the “Option” key on your Keyboard and go to the “Go” Menu and choose “Library”.

Later you can use these steps to restore the file:
You can delete or move the current file from
Windows XP or 2000:
C:\Documents and Settings[Username]\Application Data\EndNote

Windows Vista or Windows 7 and Windows 8:
C:\Users[Username]\AppData\Roaming\EndNote

Put back the original file.
On a MAC
You can delete or move the current file from

Users:[your login name with the house icon]:Library:Application Support:EndNote

Put back the original file.

NOTE:

To get the Default Reference Types you can use the EndNote Defaults button on the Reference Types section in Preferences.
